Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is a technology that prevents theft of goods from retail shops, books from libraries, or items from office buildings. It works by attaching special tags to the products or books, which can only be removed or deactivated by the staff when the customer pays or borrows them. If someone tries to leave the store with an active tag, a detection system at the exit will trigger an alarm or alert the staff. Some shops also use detection systems at the restroom entrances to stop people from taking unpaid items into the restroom. For expensive goods that customers can handle, wired alarm clips known as spider wrap may replace tags. Electronic article surveillance systems can be classified into several major types based on their technology: - Electro-Magnetic, or magneto-harmonic - Acousto-magnetic, or magnetostrictive - Radio Frequency (8.2MHz) - Microwave - Video surveillance systems (partially)
